London's Air Ambulance Helipad Abseil 2024

Please sponsor Shez and me as we abseil 280ft down The Royal London Hospital! Read below the harrowing, but incredible survival story of our brother, Mark xx

On 19th March 2022 we received a phone call which every family dreads, turning our world upside down and filling our hearts and minds with abject fear. Our beloved brother, Mark, had been struck by a car travelling at over 50mph whilst out for a run. He was catapulted over 30 feet along the road, the extent of his injuries was numerous, sustaining head to toe trauma of the most severe and life-threatening nature. We give our eternal gratitude to the fast-acting, dedicated and expert East Anglia Air Ambulance (EAAA) team who were nearby and were scrambled to attend to Mark. Upon landing in a nearby field, they quickly realised Mark had lost an incredible amount of blood from a severe head wound and required almost 4 pints of donor blood which was administered at the roadside. His chest was medically opened and was intubated to enable him to breath as a result of an extreme tension pneumothorax (a life-threatening emergency wherein a large air collection in the pleural space compromises respiration and cardiac function). Both lungs were punctured and had collapsed, and Mark sustained 3 spinal fractures, the most critical was the C1, just 1 vertebra below his skull.  His elbow and shoulder were smashed and his life was left hanging by a thread.

The EAAA team acted with extreme care and precision alongside a busy A-road for 65 minutes before flying Mark to The Royal London Hospital whereupon the expert team at the London Air Ambulance helipad took over, providing ongoing critical care. As a family, we waited downstairs in A&E, our minds churning, unable to comprehend the extreme trauma Mark’s body had endured. The hours, days and weeks which followed were a fog of sleepless nights, stomach-churning worry, prayers and fear-filled bedside visits while Mark remained in a coma. The incredible ICU team at Royal London were steadfast in their critical care, not leaving his bedside for a single minute, filling us with hope, positivity and encouragement. We can never fully express our deepest gratitude, but we remain humbled by these incredible people every single day. The EAAA and LAA worked together to keep Mark alive, to give us our brother back.

Now we, Mark’s sisters, are trying to show our appreciation in some small way. Your donation will help save more lives by keeping the helicopter in the air and the rapid response cars on the road, ready for when they are needed most. By providing intervention as quickly as possible after injury, London’s Air Ambulance Charity aims to give patients the best chance of survival, and best quality of life, after trauma.

On 8th September, we (Shez & Rox) will be abseiling 280 feet (!) from the home of London's Air Ambulance Charity one the 17th Floor of The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. Please give what you can to say thank you for saving Mark and to help save more lives across London.
