TCS London Marathon 2024

In April 2024 I shall be running the London Marathon to support the London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London.

London’s Air Ambulance is a charity relying on public donations and fundraising. Without all of our support there will be no life-saving air ambulance service for the 10 million people that live and work in London.

Five patients a day require the help of London’s Air Ambulance when their lives are on the line. Covering the area within the M25 it takes just 11 minutes to get the helicopters to the scene and for London’s Air Ambulance’s own advanced trauma team then to give life saving-treatment.

In August 2022 a friend of mine was one of those five people and without London’s Air Ambulance treatment at the scene my friend would not be with us today. This is my why…

No matter who you are or where you are from if you are in London (as a resident, commuting worker, tourist or otherwise) and its the very worst day of your life, London’s Air Ambulance medics can be at the scene within 11 minutes, bringing the emergency department to you.

London’s Air Ambulance’s current fleet of two MD902 Explorer helicopters are reaching the end of their serviceable lives and need replacing by Autumn 2024. Their Up Against Time appeal is focussed on raising £15 million to achieve this and replace the existing helicopters and continue the excellent service provided to Londoners

A little about me… I am 56 years old and have spent the majority of my working life working on construction sites in Central London. I am an avid runner, cyclist and triathlete. In the summer of 2021, whilst out running I took a fall and ended up in A&E as a result. Long story short, a chest X-ray revealed abnormalities which led to blood tests and a diagnosis of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL). CLL is a lifelong blood cancer which reduces the effectivity of my immunity system. In January 2023 my immunity system was so low I was hospitalised requiring medical intervention to regain my health. Since then I have received immunotherapy treatment and continue to take cancer growth blocker medication. Whilst my fitness may have taken a back step I have still kept running and cycling which has helped me battle my CLL and mentality throughout this year.

Despite my condition I have chosen to run for London’s Air Ambulance to thank them for saving my friend as well as thousands of others. Many of us will never need their expertise but you can never know when suddenly that may change. I am fortunate to still have my friend because of their great work. Please help me to raise funds for the charity to allow them to continue providing life-saving treatment to all Londoners.

That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured, since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going." - Forrest
