London's Air Ambulance Helipad Abseil 2020

Number of pre-hospital blood transfusions increases during COVID-19 pandemic

London’s Air Ambulance Charity has joined leading medical organisations to mark World Blood Donor Day on Sunday 14th June and raise awareness of the importance of blood donation, showing how donating blood can save a life in London.

London’s Air Ambulance was the first air ambulance service in the UK to carry blood on board its aircraft and administer pre-hospital blood transfusion to critically injured people suffering from catastrophic bleeding on scene. Since this began in 2012 there has been a reduction in pre-hospital deaths in London from 34% to 19%. Around three quarters of all UK air ambulances now carry some form of blood product on board.

Approximately 100 people a year in London suffer traumatic injuries that result in such serious bleeding that they may die before reaching hospital.

New data released by the Charity shows that during the COVID-19 pandemic the number of pre-hospital blood transfusions has increased during the period March 12th to May 31st 2020 compared to the same period in 2019 (30 transfusions and 24 transfusions respectively).

The specialist Barts Health NHS Trust Consultants who pioneered the blood on board initiative within London’s Air Ambulance have told of how the injured patients in the COVID-19 period were also more seriously injured and needed a higher number of pre-hospital blood products.

Prince William 'considering return as air ambulance pilot'

The Duke of Cambridge is said to be seriously considering returning as an air ambulance pilot to “do his bit” in the fight against coronavirus.

Prince William, who spent two years flying medics to emergencies from 2015, is reported to have said he now wants to get back in the cockpit.

Despite privately revealing his desire to return to the frontline amid the Covid-19 crisis, his royal duties may prevent it, The Sun reported on Monday night.

Air ambulances will be able to touch down at Kensington Palace

Air ambulances will be able to touch down at Kensington Palacefor refuelling during the coronavirus pandemic after the Duke of Cambridge gave permission for them to use a private lawn.

It is thought the move – agreed by Prince William, who became patron of the London Air Ambulance Charity in March – will save lives because it means paramedics will no longer have to waste precious time flying to the nearest fuelling base in Watford.

Under the new arrangement, helicopters will be able to land and take off from Perks Field, grassland next to Kensington Palace usually used as a landing site for Royal Family helicopters.

The palace serves as the London home and offices of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who are currently in lockdown with their three children at their Anmer Hall residence in Norfolk.

I'm fundraising for..

London’s Air Ambulance is the charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to London’s most seriously injured patients. Your donation will help save more lives by keeping the helicopter in the air and the rapid response cars on the road, ready for when they are needed most. By providing intervention as quickly as possible after injury, London’s Air Ambulance Charity aims to give patients the best chance of survival, and best quality of life, after trauma.

The team responds to, on average, five patients in London per day that are so seriously injured, they need our team’s expertise on-scene. We aim to give these patients not only the best chance of survival, but the best quality of life after serious injury.

During 2019 the team attended...

Stabbings and shootings 545 Patients
Road traffic collisions483 Patients
Falls from height381 Patients
Other246 Patients

This charity relies on public donations and fundraising to keep its helicopters and staff doing what they do best, saving lives
