London's Air Ambulance Helipad Abseil 2020

Saving Young Lives

All too often we read of young lives in London cut short as a result of violence. The number one reason for call out by the London Air Ambulance is to attend these incidents and do amazing work to save these young people. (32% of patients in 2019). That's why I am raising money and awareness to support this work by Abseiling off the top of the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel on Sunday.

Kids are being stabbed and shot, perhaps for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or perhaps for being mixed up in the wrong crowd. All too easily young people are drawn into gangs and gang violence. It is an indiscriminate blight on the capital and the country as a whole. The impact reaches far beyond individual communities, postcodes or socio-economics. It affects us all.

This isn't the forum to discuss the causes and possible solutions. Here I am simply celebrating the brave women and men who risk their lives each day to help those caught up in this terrible mess. They deserve better funding, but for now the London Air Ambulance relies on your donations to keep these magnificent birds in the air and doing everything that they can to save these young lives.

You know what to do - please give now to support the LAA

As a Cyclist...

OK, I don't like to categorise myself too much one way or another, but I often ride a bike to get around London, so I guess the moniker fits. That experience often means that I am confronted with situations where the vulnerability of the human body is made all too apparent - close calls, recklessness, a few injuries of my own and being witness to other people's misfortunes.

Around 100 cyclists each year will be treated by the London Air Ambulance service, and that's why I'm here shouting about their tireless and brilliant work. Based on 2019 data, cyclists accounted for just under 20% of people killed or seriously injured in road traffic accidents (RTAs) in London. In the same year, London Air Ambulance attended 483 RTAs (28% of all their patients treated). So that gives us around 96 LAA call outs to attend a person injured while riding their bike.

So, as a cyclist, and as a fellow vulnerable human being I am immensely grateful in the knowledge that these heroes of the sky give us all a bit more assurance that we will be looked after when we put our bodies in harm's way each day

Thank you for reading and stay safe on the roads - I hope with all my heart that you never have need of their help

If you're going to jump off a building, it's probably best that it's a hospital...

On Sept 19th I'm throwing myself off the top of the 17-storey Royal London Hospital. Thankfully I'll have some ropes to hopefully arrest my descent and avoid becoming a bloody mess on the floor, though I expect that I will probably still need a change of trousers when I get down.

Most of us take for granted that if the worst happens and we do unfortunately end up as a bloody mess somewhere, there will be paramedics, ambulances and, if it's really serious, a helicopter to get us the best possible care. What a lot of people don't know is that those helicopters are funded by a charity - London's Air Ambulance. So if you like the idea of keeping these amazing red birds up in the skies over London, please consider sending a few quid their way. It's easy... just click the amount over on the right of this screen

I'm fundraising for...

London’s Air Ambulance is the charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to London’s most seriously injured patients. Your donation will help save more lives by keeping the helicopter in the air and the rapid response cars on the road, ready for when they are needed most. By providing intervention as quickly as possible after injury, London’s Air Ambulance Charity aims to give patients the best chance of survival, and best quality of life, after trauma.
