This September, I am supporting the London Air Ambulance Charity by abseiling down the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. I’ve never done this kind of challenge before, so I’m pushing myself to it for the London Air Ambulance, a charity dedicated to saving lives.
The Air Ambulance was formed in an effort to reach people with serious life threatening injuries and perform surgery at the site of the incidents before it’s too late. This includes performing open chest surgery (thoracotomies), blood transfusions and general anaesthetics. This is necessary since these incidents can’t always be reached by the ambulances and emergency services provided by the NHS, and so the Air Ambulance has made a big difference for so many people, by increasing the best chance of survival, and best quality of life
There are many stories about how the London Air Ambulance has impacted many people. The one which I feel personally connected to is Jordan's. He was cycling to work, but was knocked off and ended up with a serious head injury. The London Air Ambulance was dispatched and provided life-saving treatment before transferring him to hospital, where he spent 14 days in a medically induced coma. When I learned about Jordan’s story, it took me back to when I was 17, carelessly cycling without a helmet down a country road, and getting my skull fractured after I was knocked off. I’ve reflected on this incident 13 years later, remembering the guilt I had and being unable to sleep in hospital for a week. I try to remind myself every day how lucky and thankful I am to be here with no permanent damage, and to still cycle, have crazy adventures and live life to the fullest. Jordan mentioned in his own words “I died that day, and the London Air Ambulance brought me back to life”.
Any donations would really help me reach my goal, and I greatly appreciate any kind of support possible. The money raised will help the London Air Ambulance obtain new helicopters necessary to continue their mission. This charity makes a huge difference in saving lives and taking pressure off the NHS, where many staff are going on strike these days. The resources for the Air Ambulance are not provided by the NHS and are dependent on fundraising. I’m really thankful to take the opportunity to honour the amazing work they do.
