I'm running to help save lives in London
"London’s Air Ambulance is the charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to London’s most seriously injured patients"
On a cold Saturday morning, January 19th 2019 at 09.30am, I quickly learnt the above quote to be very true.
Instead of a normal Saturday morning Park Run with Dad (I never made it past the end of January..), there was some housework to be done in the newly built dream home for Mum and Dad.
Just after 9am, I receive a call from my brother, in tears, to get round to the house ASAP, Dad has hurt himself. To what extent, I wasn't sure..
Arriving at the house to see 2 ambulances, a police car and the London Air Ambulance team on site, I knew it was serious, but Dad was in good hands. After what seemed quite some time, Dad was wheeled out on a stretcher, foil sheets and a neck brace on and into the ambulance. At that point, I knew it was serious.
After initial tests and x-rays, Dad underwent surgery for a broken neck, C5 vertebrae broken with a shard of bone damaging the C4 area of the spinal cord.
After 6 months to the day, July 19th 2019, Dad was released from hospital and home, where he could focus on his recovery and rehab with friends, family and a newly born granddaughter (just a week before... good timing!).
Dad has gone on to make amazing strides in his recovery and, although still wheelchair bound, does not and will not let it stop him doing anything. He has undertaken his own amazing feats, physically and mentally, becoming a granddad for the second time, built a new house, a more accessible home and partnering and raising money for Wings for Life (SCI charity) who have been unbelievable in his and our families rehab. He is a true inspiration to us all!
If it wasn’t for the actions of the London Air Ambulance, the doctors and paramedics that arrived on site on that morning, none of the above would have been achievable. Running the marathon and raising money to keep the helicopters in the sky and saving peoples lives, like Dad, is a little bit of gratitude and big thank you for keeping our family together!
Please give what you can to help save lives in London.
