I'm running to help save lives in London
‘’5km is the furthest I’ve ever run, I’m not sure a marathon is for me.…’’
This was my response last year when asked about the Marathon; and yet here I am asking for your donations. It’s good to know I don’t cave to peer pressure; as a father to 3 young children I’m sure this will fare me well in the future….
Truth be told, I’ve always had a great reason to run and for a cause that’s very personal to me and my family, but have needed the push to sign up and commit. I’m very proud to say that in April I will be running for The London Air Ambulance.
In 2016 I fractured my skull playing rugby. The London's Air Ambulance were called, and thanks to their speedy response the onboard doctor put me in an induced coma which slowed the swelling of my brain.
I was then taken to St George’s hospital in Tooting for an MRI and spent the next 24 hours in a coma. Just 4 days later I was released and sent home. What followed was a month of headaches, short term memory loss (or so I’m told by Mrs C) and trips back to hospital for assessments, including a check on my mental health.
I’ve no recollection of the match itself and have been fortunate not to have suffered any mental trauma as a result of my injury. My only reminder is the small(ish) scar I have on my head, which as long as I don’t go bald like my Dad, my Grandfather and all the other men in my family, should remain hidden in my hairline forever – thank goodness!
Regardless, I’m always reminded that Soraya was on the side line that Saturday, heavily pregnant with Lily (our first), and it goes without saying that life for us all would have looked drastically different without the lifesaving support of The London's Air Ambulance.
I’ve dug out some pictures from around the time of the accident which I hope will give you all a good incite into the day.
I would be very grateful if you would make a donation to my page and help me to reach my target. In the meantime I’m going to get started on my new ’16 week running program’ which is doing a great job of ruining my usual Sundays on the beach here in Bermuda….
Thanks so much.
George
